Grant was a humble tanner's son who was born in Ohio. He was accepted to West Point and graduated to fight in the Mexican War. After resigning as a captain, Grant returned to working at his family's leather store. He was able to gather a group of volunteer soldiers that he became brigadier general of. This reignited his military career, leading him on the path to become general. 
    After taking control of the Mississippi Valley, Fort Henry, and Fort Donelson. Grant was appointed to major general of volunteers by President Lincoln. In April of 1862, Grant heroically led his men to victory at Shiloh. Grant continued to lead victories in Vicksburg and Chattanooga, earning him the title of General-in-Chief in 1864. Soon after Grant trapped General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, Lee surrendered. 
    General Ulysses S. Grant's heroic actions in the Civil War greatly aided the Union on their way to victory, and he played a very big role in the winning of the war.
